The Meaning of the Trident: Strength, Identity, and Heritage

The Meaning of the Trident: Strength, Identity, and Heritage - Taras Lesya

The Trident, or Tryzub, is one of the most important symbols of Ukrainian identity. It represents a thousand years of history, faith, and resilience — values that continue to shape the Ukrainian spirit today. But what does it mean?

A Symbol with Ancient Roots

The Tryzub dates back to the 10th century, when it appeared on the coins and royal seals of Prince Volodymyr the Great of Kyivan Rus. Historians believe it symbolized power, sovereignty, and divine protection. Over time, it evolved from a royal emblem into a national symbol of unity and freedom.

When Ukraine regained independence in 1991, the Tryzub was officially adopted as the national coat of arms, reflecting both historical continuity and a modern statement of self-determination.

Interpreting the Three Points of the Trizub

The trident’s shape has inspired many interpretations. Some see the three points as representing the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, connecting the symbol to deep spiritual roots. Others view it more broadly—as the union of past, present, and future, or the balance of mind, body, and spirit.

In every interpretation, the trident expresses harmony and strength — an emblem of faith, endurance, and belonging.

The Hidden Word: ВОЛЯ (Volya)

One of the most beautiful discoveries about the Tryzub is that its form can be read as the Cyrillic word “ВОЛЯ” (Volya) — which translates to “freedom” or “will.”

This interpretation captures the essence of what the trident means to Ukrainians everywhere. It’s a statement of spirit — the drive for independence, dignity, and freedom.

The Trident Today

Beyond its national meaning, the trident has become a universal expression of identity and resilience. For Ukrainians around the world, wearing the Tryzub is a way to stay connected to their heritage and to express pride.

At Taras Lesya, our Trident jewelry—crafted in 14K gold, or 925 sterling silver, made in the USA—honors that legacy.
